Lawmaker Demands Clarification Over Missing Files in Munir Murder Case

Jakarta Globe. Desmon Mahesa, deputy chairman of House of Representatives Commission III, which oversees legal affairs, has demanded that the State Secretariat take action to locate investigation documents related to the murder of prominent human rights defender Munir Said Thalib.

“If these documents are not available at the State Secretariat, it means something is wrong,” Desmon said in Jakarta on Thursday (13/10). “If they were lost during [State Secretary Pratikno’s] term, it means he has to take responsibility.”

Desmon also called on the government to be transparent in handling Munir’s case and for all information related to investigation to be made public.

“What the state secretary must do now is to summon the state apparatus to investigate how the documents were lost and who lost them. We should find out if they were lost under the previous administration,” he said.

According to the lawmaker, the next step would be to restore the investigation files with help from members of the original fact-finding team.
