Protesters Must Not Infringe on Others’ Rights While Exercising Theirs: Police Chief

The Jakarta Globe – Jakarta. With the mass rally against Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama scheduled for Friday (04/11), National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian said although every citizen has the right to protest, it should not infringe on the rights of others or disturb the public order.

“It must not disturb other people. Blocking roads is not allowed. The protesters should also take cognizance of moral and ethical issues,” Tito said on Monday.

Tito advised protesters to maintain discipline among themselves and cooperate with the police to make sure the rally proceeds safely and orderly.

“It is also for their voice to be conveyed well,” he said.

The police are ready to secure the rally site.

“The protest is slated to take place in front of the State Palace and maybe at the House of Representatives complex. We will safeguard these locations, but it is not impossible that protesters will move to other locations as well,” Tito said.
