TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Indonesian National Police reacted to the rampant spread of hoaxes thorough social media.

The hoaxes are considered to often bring anxiety among the people and many people now love spreading hoaxes.

One of the hoaxes that has been recently gone viral on social media Facebook is the news on rush money.

In the hoax, there is a call for Moslems to withdraw their money if Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok becomes a suspect in the case of alleged religious blasphemy.

“For those who love spreading hoaxes, please be careful. The consequence is serious. You can be sentenced to four years in prison or a fine of Rp. 1 billion,” said Head of Public Information Division of the National Police Headquarter Comr. Sr. Rikwanto, on Sunday 20 November 2016.

He explained that those who spread hoaxes could be charged with article 28 paragraph 1 of Law on Information and Electronic Transaction.
