Military build-up intended for regional stability: Minister

Jakarta (ANTARA News) – Indonesian Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu said military build-up is not intended as an arms race but an effort to create domestic and regional stability.

“In Indonesia, the military development is not an effort to revive arms race in the region. I would stress here that as an ASEAN member, Indonesia is ready to cooperate to guarantee order, stability and security,” the minister said, while addressing an international defense industry seminar, in Jakarta on Thursday.

Indonesia gives priority to peaceful solutions and diplomacy based on the 1945 Constitution.

According to Ryamizard, all countries, including Indonesia will continue to develop their military strength.

Therefore, modernizing and building military strength are intended to defend the nation in the face of concrete threats such as terrorism, natural disasters and epidemics.

On Thursday, the defense ministry is organizing an interaction forum among the government, industrial circles and academicians.

“I am convinced that this forum would be able to increase cooperation among the ministry of defense, the military industry and the academicians,” he said.

Thus, he expressed hope to create harmony between the need for defense equipment of the Indonesian military (TNI) and the optimal production of the defense industry.

On the occasion, the minister opened the seminar titled “Achieving Comprehensive Maritime Surveillance and Security through Technology Innovation and Partnerships.”

The seminar, which was organized as part of the Indo Defence 2016 Expo and Forum, discussed international cooperation issues through technology innovation in the frame work of regional maritime security.(*)
