The Jakarta Globe – Jakarta. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Prabowo Subianto, chairman of the Great Indonesia Movement Party, or Gerindra, have agreed to protect Indonesia’s national unity to prevent it from being fractured by political differences.
“Mr. Prabowo and I have discussed the situation in Indonesia. We were both keen to achieve the same goals; for the Indonesian flag, for a unified country, for Pancasila, for the 1945 Constitution and for Bhinneka Tunggal Ika [unity in diversity],” Jokowi said during a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday (17/11).
The president invited Prabowo to Merdeka Palace for a discussion on various issues currently facing Indonesia. The occasion also served as a reciprocal visit after Jokowi went to see the Gerindra chairman at his private residence at Hambalang in Bogor district, West Java, last month.
Jokowi said national unity is of great value and that it should be nurtured by all elements of the state to ensure that it is not damaged by political differences.
“It is priceless for the Republic of Indonesia,” Jokowi said.
The two politicians also discussed other matters, including the state of the domestic and global economy.
